Snoring Therapy

SNORING WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL

Just about everyone snores from time to time; even babies or your pet may snore, but snoring can cause poor sleep quality and quantity. Poor quality and quantity of sleep can cause in some cases life threatening illnesses.

What is Snoring?

It is caused by the vibrations of your soft and or hard tissues. These vibrations occur because of increasingly narrow air passages. When air passes through this narrow passage a “flapping” sound occurs because of the soft tissues. Over a period of time these tissues are battered and become more inflamed and narrow the air passage even more.

Some Snorers may have a bigger problem called SLEEP APNEA.

If your airway becomes too narrow this may cause breathing difficulties. Sometimes the airway becomes seriously blocked and you are unable to get a breath of air. This causes you to wake up. Every time these events occur you place more stress on your brain and heart. If this continues and your sleep is continually interrupted, you experience health problems such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack and depression. Your quality of life declines.

Your bed partner may notice that when you Snore there are periods when you are silent and then perhaps a loud “snort” or gasp as you resume breathing.

Signs:

Your partner notices a gasp or you stop breathing during sleep?
You wake feeling not rested or tired?
Do you wake with headache, dry mouth, or sore throat?
Have your energy or motivation levels decreased?
Finding it difficult to concentrate?

What can a dentist do?

The gold standard is to have a physician prescribed sleep study to determine the level of sleep apnea you have. If it is mild to moderate they may prescribe an oral appliance. Dr. Jones can work closely with your physician to get the oral appliance that works best for you.

A DENTIST CAN not diagnose sleep apnea, but Dr. Jones can recommend a reputable sleep lab. SHE CAN ALSO WORK WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN TO GET YOU AN ORAL APPLIANCE IF THAT IS APPROPRIATE THERAPY FOR YOU.

How does an oral appliance work?

The snore guard appliance repositions your lower jaw so that the airway is opened more and air can pass through. This is a custom fitted appliance and most patients find it comfortable and easy to use.
